EUTRAIN Workshop "Europe Neighbourhood Cooperation Countries (including Russia, CIS, Black Sea, Balkan States) - Moscow, Russia - December 5-6, 2012

In the frame of the EUTRAIN project, the third regional workshop, organized by EUTRAIN Partner EURNEX along with Moscow State University of Railway Engineering (MIIT), had for objectives to discuss:

• the transport research interests and current policies in the countries of the region of Russia, CIS, Black Sea & Balkan countries
• the difficulties that exist in participating in EU transport research programmes (and research in general),
• the potential for future improvements, and the recommendations that could be made to improve the access of research Organisations from the countries concerned to EU research programmes.

EUTRAIN Workshop "International transport research cooperation in South Asia and Asia-Pacific” - Beijing, China - September 6, 2012

In the frame of the EUTRAIN project, the Second regional workshop, organized by EUTRAIN Partner ERTICO, with objectives to:

• Identify themes of interest for international transport research cooperative work,
• Discuss the conditions and prospects for facilitating such research cooperation, and
• Agree on ways forward in research cooperation for all the targeted countries.

EUTRAIN Workshop "International Transport Research Cooperation in the Mediterranean Region - Athens, Greece - July 16, 2012

In the frame of the EUTRAIN project, this first regional workshop organized under the auspices of ECTRI Member HIT aimed to promote and discuss the possibilities of greater cooperation between Mediterranean sea countries with the EU in the field of transport and all the related issues.

The objective of the workshop will be to discuss the transport research interests and current policies in the countries of the region of the Mediterranean, the difficulties that exist in participating in EU transport research programmes (and research in general), the potential for future improvements, and the recommendations that could be made to improve the access of research Organisations from the countries concerned to EU research programmes. At the same time participants of the workshop will be provided with the most recent information concerning the current transport policies as well as the plans for the next EU research framework programme for the period 2014-2020 the so called “Horizon 2020” programme.

The workshop venue is:
Royal Olympic Hotel, 28-34 Athanasiou Diakou Str., 117 43, Athens, GREECE.

Two social events took place on Sunday, July 15 and Monday, July 16.

In conjunction with this workshop, the International Activities Committee of the US/TRB decided to hold its summer meeting in Athens on July 17 and members of this Committee (prominent transport research representatives from the US and from around the world) were invited to join the EUTRAIN workshop, giving – in this way – a wider geographical coverage of the discussions.

EATIS 2012 - Valenica, Spain - May 23-25, 2012

ECTRI Member LISITT (UVEG) in collaboration with other entities is organizing the Euro American Conference on Telematics and Information Systems – EATIS conference in May 23-25, 2012 in Valencia, Spain.

EATIS 2012 aimed, but is not limited to, the production of scientific work around e-Inclusion, e-Government, e-Health, e-Learning, e-Culture, e-Entertainment (local, regional, national and international), Web Semantic, and Web 2.0 communities, contents and technologies. Furthermore, in this occasion, the conference included, specially, a new issue which is concentrated in the subject of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).

ITF’s 2012 Summit - Leipzig, Germany - May 2-4, 2012

logoYRSThe International Transport Forum’s 2012 Summit on Seamless Transport: Making Connections was held on May 2-4, 2012 in Leipzig, Germany.

In October 2011, ECTRI contributed to the 2012 International Transport Forum Seamless Transport: Making Connections Consultation with International Organizations. In total 9 contributions were sent (1 from CENIT, 4 From Fraunhofer and 4 from DLR) and all were incorporated in the Compendium on best practices prepared by ITF. It was also acknowledged that ECTRI contributed with the highest number of “good practice” cases on seamless transport.
 
This process has greatly helped ECTRI’s positioning towards ITF; ECTRI was the only research organization invited at the Consultation meeting held in Paris end of January 2012.

ECTRI Secretary General, Caroline ALMERAS, attended the summit in Leipzig, Germany.

Transport Research Arena (TRA) - Europe 2012 - Athens, Greece - April 23-26, 2012

The Transport Research Arena (TRA) - Europe 2012 conference took place on 23-26 April 2012 in Athens, Greece with a number of ECTRI supported sessions and events. ECTRI delegates were involved in 4 sessions and more than 120 researchers from 17 ECTRI Members (AIT, BASt, CERTH‐HIT, DLR, DTU, DVS, FhG, Ifsttar, KTI, LNEC, POLITO, SWOV, TNO, TRL, UPM, VTI and VTT) participated as speakers or authors.

ECTRI was actively involved in the preparation of the Conference through the participation under ERTRAC platform of C. Piehler, ECTRI President and G. Giannopoulos, HIT as members in TRA 2012 Programme Committee. About 50 experts from the ECTRI network were involved in papers reviewing for all 6 TRA pillars. ECTRI also promoted the YEAR 2012 competition, in which ECTRI was partner in 2010, by encouraging its Young Researchers to participate. ECTRI finally widely advertised about the Conference over the last months first among its members but also in number of other events in order to attract the widest transport research Community to take part in the event.

   
 

EUTRAIN NRE Launching Event - Washington, DC, USA - January 24, 2012

logoYRS EUTRAIN project successfully took place during the 2012 TRB Annual Meeting week in Washington D.C., gaining the maximum from the participation of many Organisations around the world to this major event.

After the successful official launching event of the EUTRAIN project in October 2011 in Brussels, this second event aimed specifically to launch the project among the “Network of Related Entities ‐ NRE”. The NRE is a wider network of “players” in transport research (approximately 100) covering the entire world, and who were asked to provide inputs to the project, via the project’s electronic interaction platform and e‐mails; they are also invited to participate in all project workshops and Conference.

   
 

TRB 91st Annual Meeting - Washington, DC, USA - January 22-26, 2012

In the frame of the ECTRI-TRB MoU, ECTRI actively contributed by organizing a number of sessions, giving a European flavour to the 91st TRB Annual Meeting.

The ECTRI/TRB Action plan, which implements the ECTRI/TRB MoU will be reviewed on January 22 in a session presided by G. Giannopoulos, HIT. The meeting will focus in particular on the ECTRI Scanning tour 2012 and the Young Researchers Seminar 2012.

The EUTRAIN project was an important element of ECTRI's activity at TRB. On January 22, the EUTRAIN project's activities was presented by Prof. Giannopoulos, HIT. On the following day, Prof. Giannopoulos gave a presentation on 'Promoting International Transport Research Cooperation: EU Activities and Future Work of the EUTRAIN project' during the session National Frameworks Part 1: International perspective on Research Agenda setting. On January 24, C. Alméras, ECTRI Secretary General presided the EUTRAIN project - Network of Related Entities (NRE) Launching event. Lastly, on January 27, there was a bilateral meeting presided by Prof. Giannopoulos, with US administrations, where 6 DoT related US Transport research organization were interviewed.

On January 22, P. Leviakangas, VTT presided a session entitled 'Exploring Extreme Weather Impacts on Transportation Systems Operations in Europe: Opportunities for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation'. On January 23, A. Dupont-Kieffer, ifsttar, presided the first meeting of the Scientific Committee of the 5th Conference on Women's issues in Transportation, which is supported by ECTRI and expected to take place in April 2014 in Paris, France. Prof. N. Paulley, TRL, ECTRI Vice-President participated as ECTRI representative in the Scientific Committee.
